Paper Abstract:      In this paper, the promotion of education for sustainable development is founded in a holistic view of development which addresses the ecologic, economic, social and cultural dimensions. Sustainable development is a cross-curricular theme in the Finnish national core curriculum for basic education, and it must be included in the local curriculum work and it must be apparent in the school’s operational culture. The University of Eastern Finland has included in the basic training of teachers and in educational leadership a relevant knowledge base and pedagogy for assuming a sustainable way of life. Our starting point is that forests can contribute to the learning of sustainable development. We wanted to develop a model that combines the teaching of history, the forest as a learning environment and the use of information and communication technology. Our final product is a web-site with a simulation, structures supporting visual and multisensory approaches and various forms of show and tell. The forests are considered as exemplifying context for development of generative skills and knowledge that support wellbeing and sustainable development, reflection of value systems and sense of community.
